I know my fair share of “woo-woo” entrepreneurs. Hell, I’ve gotten my fair share of side-eye from the more straight-laced business peeps from time to time. It’s a funny dynamic for those for whom spirituality is so critically important and want to make an impact. Entrepreneurship, at some point becomes inevitable. It’s really one of (maybe the) only way to scale an impact in our current world.
So here we are with our energetic awareness, our soul inspired mission and vision for the evolution of the planet – showing up to our local chamber of commerce meeting with the local carpet cleaner and bookkeeper. Anyone who has been in this position knows that there are a different set of rules at play when operating a soul-centric business.
Understanding that we are really operating a totally different business and we are different entrepreneurs is really critical. In my article on Entrepreneurial Species we also look at how critical it is to understand yourself and not get caught up in shoulds and shouldn’ts of how business is supposed to look.
Here’s the number one most important point about a soul-centric, vs a mind-centric business. IT’S NOT ONE OR THE OTHER. They are hierarchical and inclusive. Developmentally, the soul is above the mind AND inclusive of the mind. The mind is not inherently aware of or inclusive of the soul.
My coaching clients are all in business because they have a soul-centric mission to do good, make a difference and want to feel highly aligned. In fact, the more you wake up to your soul nature, the more painful it is to not be living on purpose and with a mission. Because of this, there is an unseen pressure to help, to serve and make a difference.
And for we – the weird ones – it can be really challenging to anchor a soul-centric business down into the ground, give it roots and make it work in the 3D world. It’s a real problem and I’ve seen lots of business crash on the rocks of spiritual idealism because they were unwilling to look at how to anchor their soul-vision with real-world practical application.
There is a natural tendency to spiritual awakening that goes through a phase of escapism. When we really start to see what is possible, the magic, the presence, the energy, it feels so good. And this regular, 3D world, muggle shit feels repressive, contracting, and uncomfortable.
The sad truth of it is I’ve seen people with massive, big bright spiritual gifts who are real-world avoidant who fail and flounder. The clients I work with are people who have broken through that initial stage. They’ve done 6, multiple 6 or 7 figures of annual business and now they’ve outgrown themselves and they need the next level of inner alignment to experience their next level of external growth, impact and success. I share that so that you know it’s possible.
For those who are soul-centric, soul-inspired and on a mission I invite you to do a few simple things that will be foundational to a flourishing business.
#1 Embrace being a human, on the earth, right now.
In these escapist tendencies the soul-centered entrepreneur is often looking for ways to “transcend”, “evolve” or “enlighten” their way out of being human. To those who have never experienced it, it sounds crazy. For those who have experienced it, they know all too well the feeling of waking up to a place (being a human, in a body, on earth) that just doesn’t feel like it’s fit for you. It’s part of the mechanics of the metaphysics. As we wake up to the sea of illusion we’ve been swimming in, it becomes increasingly painful, for a time, but if we’re avoiding this place, this level of reality, we’ll never fall in love with it enough to put in the dedicated energy and focus to break through and make an impact. Do the inner work to stabilize your awakening and know that there is no escaping your human nature, you must embrace it. It is, after all, an aspect of the Oneness.
#2 Find Strategies that work – for you.
Your business is likely to look different. You may need to “check with your guides”, or go into a meditation before making a decision. Good, do that, but don’t let that be an excuse for not making a decision, especially hard ones.
#3 Find the Right Balance of Effort and Flow
There is an illusion that as we become more “spiritual” or seek to do more good in the world that everything is going to get better and easier. It’s simply not true. You’re going to have to do hard things, confronting things and definitely scary things. This is part of your journey of dis-identifying with the illusion and buying into the truth – in any given moment, safety, destiny and grace are available to you. Do things that stretch you, that are hard, but don’t do them simple because they are hard – that is a recipe for disaster. Sometimes when you’re kayaking, you gotta pick up your boat and carry it over land until the stream is wide and deep enough to ride again. Business is the same – effort and flow are two halves of the same coin – learn to love and embrace both.
#4 Find A Mentor Who Really Gets You
One of the things that my coaching clients have almost universally realized is “holy shit, this guy actually understands all the weird stuff I’m thinking about.” When that happens, a part of them relaxes, they feel seen and they stop feeling alone (some for the first time ever). From that place, their nervous system can start to relax and they can more toward the alignment that is absolutely critical for them to experience enough energy and connectedness for their business to work. I find that most soul-centric entrepreneurs desperately need someone who sees them for ONE critical reason – so that they can see themselves. You’re standing too close to the issue. If you can’t see yourself, you’re going to miss the real strengths and weakness in your business, the way you’re interacting with your business, and the way your business is interacting with the world. Find someone who is a perfect fit for you and give yourself this gift, if you can.
I believe that we humans, as an entire species, get our collective ass out of the sling its in (environmental degradation, social/moral collapse, erosion of family stability, racial/gender/religious divides…) by an ever increasing number of people living from and giving away their soul level gifts. If you’ve made it this far in the article it’s likely you feel that way too. Know that you’re on the right path, know that we believe in you, know that there are things to figure out, and the world is waiting for what you have to share.
